| History of Glass | |
| Up until the middle of the 18th century, glass was spun as a thin disc, the outside of which was used for windows, whilst the center 'swirl' was either thrown away or sold cheaply to ale houses for their window and door use. However, the aristocracy and merchants who were wealthy from trading in Africa and the Far East wanted more. They wanted to cultivate the exotic plants they had bought back with them. This desire led to the first conservatories and orangeries. Heated to protect these delicate and exotic plants from the colder British climate. Early designs featured brick or stone with large glazed spans between columns. All had a solid roof. By the middle of the Industrial Revolution, cast iron and improved methods of producing large sheets of glass led to more intricate designs where glass was the main material used. The most popular example of this was Crystal Palace which housed the 1851 exhibition in London. The Exhibition's popularity led to the production of more standardised conservatories which were enjoyed by the Victorian middle classes. They became the popular venue for the formal tea party and became ever more ornate as tastes changed. Their success lasted well into the Edwardian period. However, many fell victim to repeated frost damage and rust and by the 1920s, few survived. They were victims of their own success with ever more affordable designs within reach of the smaller house owner, the upper classes looked for something different to show off their wealth. The problems and costs of keeping these structures warm during the long winters became prohibitive to ownership. Many fell into dis-repair or were demolished. Not until the development of sealed double glazing in the 1970's did things start to look up again for the humble conservatory. In todays modern world, homeowners are spoilt for choice with a range of materials - wood, uPVC and aluminium and designs, many of which take their styling and even names from those grand structures of yesteryear. Modern technology has solved many of the problems of condensation, rust and rotting. Heating bills have been reduced with new glass technologies that are now within financial reach of homeowners. Conservatories offer another room whose use is only limited by their owners imaginations. Play rooms, dining rooms, lounges, offices or even tea rooms, not forgetting the business user where large structures have become the norm at restaurants and bars, health spa's and clubs. |
